Mar. 20th, 2005 01:14 pmSpent most of yesterday sleeping, which I obviously needed after the excesses of Thursday and the not so excessive Friday. Woke early this morning with a fire in my belly and have had a productive morning in terms of various writing things I've been wanting to do for a while and also finishing The Princess Bride. None of this very helpful in tidying my poor neglected flat, but I'm sure that can wait.
The Princess Bride is an interesting book. I saw the film years ago and loved it and it's still one of my favourites. Reading the book is easy in terms of visualisation, as many of the scenes have been rendered so well on screen. But, it left me a little cold and I'm not sure why. I think it's the attempt to make it all real, with the comments on abridgement and the referring to Florin and Guilder as real places. In the film, the tinge of reality and comedy that is necessary is provided by the framing of Columbo reading the book to Kevin off the Wonder Years. In the book, the extra comments are sometimes distracting and take you out of the story too much. Still enjoyable though and perhaps if I'd read the book first, I'd prefer it. That's the way it normally seems to work.
Babbling, so off for afternoon fun now.
